The Adirondack Land Trust announced that it has purchased the south face of Moxham Mountain and its “lofty cliffs” in an area with potential to provide a new hiking trail.
The trust said it paid $160,000 to the Brassel and Zack families and the Brassel estate for 250 acres on the mountain between Minerva and North Creek.
“Moxham’s cliffs command attention and challenge hikers to reach the top, where they can enjoy views of Gore Mountain and the Hudson River to the south and the High Peaks to the north,” Mary Brassel Zack said in the land trust’s news release. Her parents bought the land in the 1950s, and she called it an “exceptional Adirondack landmark.”
There is currently no recreational access to the property, though the trust and state Department of Environmental Conservation are working to transfer the land into the Adirondack Forest Preserve. It could attract both hikers and rock climbers.

The state opened a north-side trail to the mountain’s 2,360-foot summit in 2012.
