The Hanging Spear Falls loop is probably the best backcountry ski tour in the Adirondacks that no one knows about. It’s surprising that it’s not on more cross-country skiing lists, because it integrates some of the best of the southern High Peaks: lots of views of mountains, a ski across the dramatic Flowed Lands, and an exciting ski out along the Calamity Brook Trail.

The Garden parking lot in Keene Valley will be closed to motor vehicles because Johns Brook Bridge is slated to be replaced. Work on the bridge will begin this spring and continue until late summer.

Forest Ranger John Franceschina responded to two small wildfires caused by phragmites burning in Flushing Meadows Park. The wildfires totaled 1.1 acres and were suppressed by the New York City Fire Department. These were the first reported wildfires in the state, marking the beginning of the 2019 spring fire season.
The Hammond Pond Unit Management Plan calls for miles of new trails, including a link in the North Country National Scenic Trail, proposed to traverse seven states from North Dakota to Vermont.
Loss of ice is one factor in the water temperatures in the lake, where the surface on average has warmed by 6.8 degrees Fahrenheit in August since 1964, according to the Lake Champlain Basin Program.
Conservationists complain of a federal government now more welcoming of pollutants, including carbon dioxide, as the Adirondack region’s forests and snowy winters are changing with a warmer climate.
“Sustainable farms, local food and local businesses are essential to the park’s quality of life,” Adirondack Council Executive Director William Janeway said
