New York State has purchased a Warren County property that includes the 2,400-foot Huckleberry Mountain, the governor’s office announced.
The 1,263-acre purchase includes Crystal Brook, which the state’s announcement called an excellent cold-water stream for brook trout, as well as a heron rookery and cliffs that peregrine falcons use for nesting. The New York State Open Space Conservation Plan and the Wilcox Lake Wild Forest Management Plan had prioritized purchasing Huckleberry Mountain.
“Protecting this pristine parcel will connect more hikers and outdoor enthusiasts to the outdoors and ensure future generations of visitors have the chance to experience the scenic wonder of this mountain area, while also preserving sensitive habitats for wildlife,” Environmental Conservation Commissioner Basil Seggos said in a written statement.
