Did you know that Saturday, Oct. 12 is National Farmer’s Day?
According to the website NationalDayCalendar.com, National Farmer’s Day was once called Old Farmer’s Day, and it has deep roots that go back to when agriculture was much more common in everyday life. Essentially, the day was to thank farmers for their hard work and contribution to the economy. It is believed that agriculture is one of the world’s oldest industries, and the economies of many countries still rest squarely on the shoulders of the agricultural industry.
The day was set on Oct. 12 because it is after the traditional harvest times of many crops—back before cold-hardy cultivars and technologies like high tunnels and other methods to extend the growing season were put into practice. That way, the farmers themselves would be able to join in the festivities because they would be done with the harvest.
To mark the occasion, Essex Farm, 2503 NYS Rte 22 in Essex, is offering a farm tour. Beginning at 10 a.m. sharp in front of the Farm Store, the tour covers the vegetable fields, pasture, and livestock areas. At noon, participants are invited to take part in a potluck lunch in the Pavilion. Bring a dish to share and your own place setting. After lunch, take an optional self-guided hike along the farm roads to some of the farm’s more remote areas. Farm Tours take place rain or shine. Participants should bring all-weather clothing and sturdy rubber boots and expect a long walk over rough terrain.
