Protect opposes change in clear-cutting policy

The APA is seeking public comment on the change in policy, which the agency’s board approved in November.
“PROTECT believes that a decision by the APA to significantly loosen clearcutting rules will have wide ranging implications for long-term forest management in the Adirondack Park as well as seriously undermine public support for the state conservation easement program, among other negative consequences. ‘The Adirondack Park has largely avoided the clearcutting controversy that raged over policy for National Forest lands, in Maine and Vermont. In Vermont statewide legislation significantly reformed the practice. This proposal seems like a step backwards,’ said Peter Bauer, executive director of Protect.

If this pushes most industrial timberland into FSC or SFI certification (a requirment for the general permit which has restrictiosn that would probably be similar to what would be found with a regular permit anyway) isn’t that going to make for less cutting and better managed forests? Some of these groups just seem opposed to everything witout thinking it through. A pause to re-asses this is a good idea but if it makes good sense I hope these folks don’t stand in the way again.
